Iron Ridge Coaching · Non-clinical
Coaching vs. IOP: which is right
When $4,500-a-month coaching is appropriate and when the $30,000 eight-week IOP is indicated — including why we recommend the more expensive one.
- Cadence: 2 sessions per week
- Between sessions: Reasonable daily calls and check-ins included
- Delivery: Austin in-person at launch; virtual available for Austin-metro clients
- Price: Pricing shared during discovery call
- Engagement: Engagement length discussed during discovery call
Both are Iron Ridge services. They are built for different situations, and the honest answer is often the more expensive one.
The IOP is $30,000 for eight weeks. Coaching is $4,500 a month. We are aware of how that comparison reads, so it is worth being blunt: we recommend the IOP when it is indicated, including to people who came in asking about coaching because it costs less.

When the IOP is the right answer
Nobody has formulated what is driving this. If the OCD, the ADHD, the anxiety disorder, the depression, or the trauma history has never been properly assessed, coaching is working on the surface of something nobody has looked at. The IOP starts with intake assessment precisely because getting that wrong wastes everything that follows.
The behavior is currently out of control. Daily loss of control, escalation, legal exposure, imminent job loss — that is a clinical presentation and it needs stabilization, not a weekly accountability call. Coaching is not built to hold a crisis.
There is significant trauma in the picture. Trauma work requires a licensed clinician in a structured setting. It is not coaching work and no responsible coach will attempt it.
You have tried structure and accountability already, and it did not hold. If you have already done the monitoring software, the accountability partner, and the strict rules, and you are still here — more structure is not the missing ingredient. Something underneath it is.
Your partner is in acute distress. The IOP includes the Partner & Family Program at no additional cost, with her own clinician and her own clinical track. Coaching includes nothing for her.
When coaching is the right answer
You have already done clinical work and need continuity. The most common failure point in recovery is month four, when the intensive phase has ended and the structure is gone. See aftercare coaching.
The presentation is genuinely sub-clinical. A pattern you are worried about that has not yet produced the harm, escalation, or loss of control that meets IOP threshold. Structure now may prevent needing more later.
You are in ongoing therapy and want something between sessions. Coaching runs alongside licensed care. It is not a substitute for it, and a coach coordinating with your therapist — with your knowledge — is a reasonable arrangement.
The IOP schedule is genuinely impossible right now. This one comes with a caveat. If the IOP is clinically indicated and you take coaching instead because the hours are easier, you are choosing the wrong service for a scheduling reason. Sometimes that is the real constraint and we will work with it. Often it is avoidance wearing a calendar as a disguise, and we will say that too.
What we will not do
We will not enroll someone in coaching who needs the IOP because coaching is what they asked for and what they can afford. The screen exists for that reason, and who coaching is not for lists the specific presentations we decline.
Enrolling a man in the wrong service costs him six months and usually costs him the belief that recovery is possible for him. That is a worse outcome than losing the sale.
Can I do both?
Yes, and for some men that is the strongest arrangement — the IOP for the eight-week clinical arc, coaching afterwards for the continuity that determines what month six looks like.
The consult call is where this gets decided. It is a clinical conversation, and it is free.
