How to block porn on your phone, and why blockers alone rarely hold
In a brain imaging study of men seeking treatment for problematic porn use, the strongest difference from other men was not their reaction to explicit images. It was their reaction to cues that signaled those images were coming (Gola et al., 2017). That is one reason blocking easy access helps: fewer cues, fewer moments when the pull starts.
It is also why blocking is rarely enough on its own. A filter removes some cues, but not the stress, boredom or loneliness that send you looking. Here is how to set up the main protections on an iPhone or Android phone, and what to add so they actually hold.
On an iPhone
Turn on Apple's adult-content filter
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn it on.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web & Games (called Content Restrictions on some versions), then Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites.
This filters detected adult sites in Safari and in most apps that open web pages. Menu names change slightly between iOS versions.
Give the passcode to someone else
Set a Screen Time passcode that you do not know, and have someone you trust enter it. A filter you can switch off in two taps is easy to undo at the moment it matters most.
On an Android phone
Use a filtering DNS for the whole phone
- Open Settings, then Network & internet (or Connections, then More connection settings, on Samsung phones).
- Tap Private DNS and choose Private DNS provider hostname.
- Enter a family-filter hostname, such as family.cloudflare-dns.com (Cloudflare for Families) or family-filter-dns.cleanbrowsing.org (CleanBrowsing Family Filter), and save.
This filters adult sites across apps and browsers, on Wi-Fi and mobile data. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
Turn on SafeSearch
In the Google app, open Settings, then SafeSearch, and turn on the explicit results filter. It syncs to your Google account across devices.
On every device
- Turn on SafeSearch in Google and any other search engine you use.
- Filter at home by setting a family-filter DNS on your Wi-Fi router, so tablets, laptops and smart TVs are covered too.
- Consider accountability software, which reports activity to someone you choose. It works best as part of a plan, not as surveillance by a partner.
- Close the side doors: private browsing, a second browser, an old tablet, social media apps that show explicit content.
Why blockers alone rarely hold
Filters help, and for someone with an established pattern they rarely hold on their own:
- There is always a workaround. Another device, another app, another network.
- They do not touch the reason you were looking. If porn has been the way you manage stress, loneliness or low mood, the need is still there when the filter goes up.
- They can become a test. Some men spend the energy they used on porn trying to beat the filter.
- Your partner should not hold the keys. Making a partner the gatekeeper turns the relationship into policing and puts the weight of your recovery on them.
What helps is pairing the practical steps with work on what the habit has been doing for you. How to stop watching porn when willpower fails explains why deciding harder has not worked, and the confidential self-assessment can help you see whether this has become a pattern that needs more than a filter.

Frequently asked questions
How do I block porn on my iPhone?
Open Settings, then Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions. Turn it on, open App Store, Media, Web & Games (Content Restrictions on some versions), tap Web Content and choose Limit Adult Websites. Ask someone you trust to set the Screen Time passcode.
How do I block porn on Android?
In Settings, open Private DNS (under Network & internet on most phones), choose Private DNS provider hostname and enter a family filter such as family.cloudflare-dns.com. Turn on SafeSearch in the Google app as well.
Do porn blockers work?
They help by removing easy access and some of the cues that start the urge. For an established compulsive pattern they rarely hold on their own, because there is always a workaround and they do not address why you were looking.
Should my partner hold my passcode?
It is better to choose someone other than your partner, such as a coach, sponsor or trusted friend. Making a partner the gatekeeper turns the relationship into policing.
Can I get around a porn blocker?
Usually, yes, which is why filters work best as one part of a plan that also deals with what the habit has been managing.
What should I do if blockers aren't working?
If you keep getting around them, or have tried to stop and cannot, that is a pattern worth an assessment. The confidential self-assessment is a private place to start.
A filter is a tool, not a plan
Blocking porn on your phone removes some of the cues that start the pull, and that is worth doing. On its own it rarely holds against an established pattern. The protections work best when someone else holds the passcode and you are also working on what the habit has been managing.
