Ian Birdwell is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist with seventeen years in the field. As Clinical Director and co-founder of Iron Ridge, he designed the IOP curriculum, supervises the clinical staff, and carries a focused individual caseload.

His approach is direct, structured, and trauma-informed. He treats compulsive sexual behavior not as a moral failure but as a clinical problem with a clinical solution — one that requires honesty, accountability, and the right container for change.

How he got here

Ian started in 2003, answering a newspaper ad to work with troubled boys in the woods. Sixteen-hour days outside with teenagers carrying serious mental and behavioral health issues turned out to be the work he was built for. He spent the next fourteen years in wilderness camps, residential treatment centers, and intensive outpatient programs before moving into private practice a decade ago.

He is candid on his own site about why: he grew up in small-town East Texas angry and depressed without understanding why, and it took weightlifting, that first job in the woods, and finding the right therapist to change the pattern. He still uses the gym as the metaphor for therapy — difficult, but not always complicated, and responsive to consistent work.

That history is the reason Iron Ridge is built the way it is. The eight-week arc, the group structure, and the emphasis on accountability alongside acceptance come from someone who has watched what actually shifts a pattern across four different levels of care.

Clinical focus and training

Ian works with adults on compulsive sexual behavior, pornography use, impulse control, trauma and PTSD, attachment injury, mood disorders, and men's issues — typically several of those at once, since they rarely arrive separately.

His methods draw on attachment-based and psychodynamic work, cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused and strength-based approaches, selected against the individual clinical picture rather than applied uniformly.
