Sex Addiction Treatment in Texas

Private-pay sex addiction IOP for men. CSAT-trained clinical director. In-person in Austin, virtual across Texas. Multidimensional Partner Trauma support included.

If you found this page by searching for sex addiction treatment, you found the right program. Iron Ridge is a private-pay, men-only intensive outpatient program built specifically for the condition the popular term describes — compulsive sexual behavior that has continued despite real consequences and real effort to stop. Our Clinical Director, Ian Birdwell, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), credentialed through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals.

The clinical literature increasingly uses Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD), the ICD-11 framework, or sexual compulsivity to describe the same condition. Iron Ridge uses the technical terminology in clinical contexts and the lay terminology where it helps a man recognize what he is facing. The underlying treatment is the same.

Sex addiction does not respond to willpower, sincerity, or shame. It responds to structure. The Iron Ridge IOP provides that structure with multiple weekly clinical touchpoints, a male-only process group, individual therapy with a CSAT-trained clinician, psychoeducation curriculum, and parallel partner programming for spouses who want it.

How it presents

Behavioral signs we see in intake.

No single client presents with every item below. Patterns vary; the underlying compulsion does not.

  • Loss of control over sexual behavior despite repeated efforts to stop
  • Significant time absorbed by sexual behavior, content, planning, or recovery
  • Continued behavior in the face of clear consequences — marital, occupational, legal, financial, health
  • Escalation in frequency, time, content, or risk
  • Concealment, double-life patterns, deception of spouse or family
  • Sexual behavior as primary affect regulation — stress, loneliness, anger, shame
  • Disrupted sleep, work performance, or family presence due to behavior
  • Pornography-induced erectile dysfunction or loss of interest in partnered sex
  • Discovery events that have shaken the relationship
  • Shame, hopelessness, or suicidality tied to the behavior pattern
A clinical problem, not a moral one

What makes this clinical.

Most of the men we treat have already heard themselves described as selfish, broken, weak, or evil. They have often used those words on themselves. That framing has never produced lasting change in anyone. The clinical reality is that sex addiction is a treatable behavioral health condition with a defined treatment course, and the men who do well are the ones who finally accept that framing.

Treating yourself like a project will move you further than treating yourself like a problem.

How Iron Ridge treats it

Structured care, not weekly conversation.

The Iron Ridge Men’s IOP is built around what works:

  • Three-times-weekly process group with male peers in the same condition
  • Weekly individual therapy with a CSAT-trained clinician
  • Structured 8-week psychoeducation curriculum
  • Structured accountability and clinical containment
  • Parallel partner programming led by Roxcy Brown, LMFT-A, APSAT-C (MPTM-trained)
  • Continuing-care planning that survives travel, conflict, and stress

The standard IOP arc is 8 weeks. Most clients continue in some form of continuing care — lower-intensity group, individual sessions, or alumni structure — for at least a year after the IOP ends.

Who it’s for

Typical client profile.

Iron Ridge serves high-functioning professional men in Texas — executives, founders, physicians, attorneys, fathers, faith leaders — whose public lives are intact and whose private lives have quietly run out of road. Most have tried weekly therapy. Most have tried willpower. Most are exhausted. Most have a wife who knows something, partly knows something, or just found out. We are built for them.

When to seek help

A clinical threshold.

If you have tried to stop on your own for more than a year without lasting change, or if your partner has discovered the pattern, or if the behavior is now affecting your work, your sleep, or your parenting — it is time for a structured clinical evaluation. The cost of waiting is almost always higher than the cost of starting.

Frequently asked

Practical questions, answered plainly.

Is sex addiction a real condition?
Yes. While ‘sex addiction’ is the popular term, the underlying clinical condition is recognized internationally as Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (ICD-11 code 6C72). It is treatable behavioral health, not a character defect.
What credentials should the clinician have?
Look for CSAT (Certified Sex Addiction Therapist) credentialing, state licensure, and clinical experience working specifically with men presenting compulsive sexual behavior. Iron Ridge’s Clinical Director, Ian Birdwell, holds all three.
Is the program in-person or virtual?
Both. Group sessions are available in person in Austin and virtually anywhere in Texas. Many of our clients attend virtually for privacy and logistics.
Do you take insurance? How does payment work?
Iron Ridge Recovery operates on a private-pay basis. We are out-of-network with all commercial insurance carriers. For clients with PPO plans that include out-of-network behavioral health benefits, we provide a monthly superbill that you can submit to your carrier for potential partial reimbursement. We do not bill insurance on your behalf and do not accept Medicaid or Medicare.
What about my wife?
Iron Ridge has a parallel partner program led by Roxcy Brown, LMFT-A, APSAT-C, trained in the Multidimensional Partner Trauma Model. Partner care is a separate clinical service, not an adjunct to yours.
Is this confidential?
Yes. Private-pay, out-of-network status removes the third-party insurance reporting that erodes confidentiality in most behavioral health settings. Group composition is closed and confidential. We do not list clients, do not publish photographs of clients, and protect the identity of every man in the program.
